THE TEST BENCH / INPUT / RECORD

Microphone test.

Check whether your microphone picks up your voice, view its live waveform, and make a local sample to play back. Your audio stays in your browser.

Speak for a few seconds, then finish to hear yourself. Starting this test records a local sample, up to 30 seconds. Nothing is uploaded.

Microphone settings & live monitoring

Use headphones to avoid feedback. Off by default.

Ready. No sound plays until you choose a test.

Choose Start mic test to allow audio-only microphone access. Finish releases the microphone. Playback never starts automatically.

How to test your microphone online

Start the microphone test and allow the permission prompt for soundtesters.com. Speak a short sentence at your usual distance. A moving waveform and changing input level show that the browser is receiving an audio signal. Starting the test also records a local sample for up to 30 seconds. Select Finish & listen, then Listen to my sample to hear it. Playback does not start automatically.

How to read the microphone level

The meter shows an approximate RMS level in dBFS, where 0 dBFS is the digital ceiling. Readings below that are normal. A very low reading may mean a quiet room, a muted input, or low gain; it does not by itself identify the cause. Repeated clipping warnings suggest that the captured samples are close to their digital limit. Lower the input gain or move farther away and compare again.

Choose the right input before diagnosing the microphone

Your laptop microphone, USB headset, webcam, and Bluetooth device may all appear as separate inputs. After granting permission, select the input you want from the device list. Browser and operating-system processing may alter the signal. The sample rate is reported by the capture settings when available, otherwise by the analysis context; it is not proof of recording quality.

Microphone not working?

Check the hardware mute switch and your operating system’s microphone privacy settings. Allow microphone access for this website, then reload if the browser requests it. Close another app that is using the microphone exclusively. If the waveform moves but your downloaded recording is quiet, compare it with the same input in another app. Follow the audio troubleshooting checklist for a more systematic check.

Good questions.
Clear answers.

What is recorded during the microphone test?

This test records a local sample so you can listen afterward. Nothing is uploaded. If your browser does not support recording, live analysis remains available; no recording is created.

Why do I hear an echo when monitoring?

Your speaker output can feed back into the microphone. Turn monitoring off or use headphones. Monitoring is off by default.

Does a moving waveform mean my mic is good?

It confirms a signal reaches the browser. Listen to a local sample for distortion, hum, dropouts, or background noise. This is not a calibrated hardware certification.

What happens when I stop the test?

The active microphone tracks are stopped. Switching away from the page also stops capture. A recording you already made remains in this page until you clear it or leave; downloaded files stay on your device.
